The success of Germany as a tourist destination is confirmed with a ninth record result for incoming tourism.
For the full year 2018, between January and December, the German Federal Statistical Office recorded 87.7 million overnight stays of foreigners in accommodation establishments with at least ten beds. This corresponds to an increase of 3.8 million international nights compared to the previous year, an increase of 4.5 per cent.
For the record, world tourism gained 3.5 percent during the same period.
Like attendance here in Saarburg, in the Saar Valley, tourism entering Germany in 2018 grew even more dynamically than the previous two years.
With growth of over 6 percent, the number of tourists from Europe are increasing significantly.
The two main source markets for Germany in 2018 are its two neighbouring countries, the Netherlands with more than 1.6 per cent growth and Switzerland with more than 3.8 per cent growth.
The United States is the third largest source market with 7.1 percent growth.
Germany was also a choice destination among French tourists in 2018 with 3.7 million overnight guests, an increase of 4.4 percent over the same time the previous year.
Note that with 13 million business trips, Germany remains by far the most important business destination for Europeans. There was a slight increase of 1 percent due to conferences and congresses that increased by 4.0 percent.
Finally in 2018, the internet is in top position for booking travel from Europe to Germany: the proportion of online reservations has gone from 82 to 85 percent compared to the previous year.
